Cyclones beat South Dakota 9-1 in five innings

Coming off of five losses in their last six games, the Cyclones were able to turn things around as they earned a 9-1 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes Tuesday.
This is their second win over the Coyotes this season.
Two freshmen made a huge impact for the Cyclones on Tuesday. Pitcher Shannon Mortimer and company held South Dakota to one run, and Kasey Simpson hit two home runs.
The Iowa State offense struck early, as Simpson hit a grand slam to left field in the bottom of the first inning and the Cyclones took an early 4-0 lead.
Senior designated player Kaylee Bosworth hit the Cyclones’ second home run of the day to give the Cyclones a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Simpson hit another home run, this time a solo home run, to push the Cyclones’ lead to six.
In that same inning, Sami Williams hit an RBI double to left center to give the Cyclones a 7-0 lead over the Coyotes.
The Coyotes’ first and only run of the game came in the top of the fifth inning off of an error.
Simpson hit a two-run RBI double that gave the Cyclones a 9-1 eight-run rule victory over the Coyotes in the bottom of the fifth.
Iowa State now has a record of 19-15 and will face the Drake Bulldogs (21-13) for the first time this season on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Cyclone Sports Complex.
