After being benched because of a team rule violation, Cyclone outside hitter Victoria Henson was back in the lineup on Friday night in Iowa State’s first match of the Diet Coke Classic tournament in Minneapolis.

Henson was able to contribute on the court by leading the Cyclones in kills in the 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) victory over George Washington.

Henson recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs that display her continuation as an all-around volleyball player for Iowa State.

Also in the Cyclone mix was sophomore right side hitter Kelsey Petersen who posted a career high .450 hitting percentage consisting of 10 kills and only a single hitting error. Sophomore Rachel Hockaday also added a double-double in kills and digs with 10 each.

Both Hockaday and Petersen have made an impact after a year of playing under their belts. With the two weapons on the outsides, opponents could have trouble stopping the dynamic duo in the remainder of the tournament.

As a team, Iowa State combined for a .328 hitting percentage, much higher than the dismal attack the Cyclones posted against Northern Iowa on Wednesday Sept. 2.

Iowa State’s defensive effort was displayed in the score, as ISU didn’t allow the Colonials to reach 20 points in any of the three sets. The Cyclones also held George Washington to a weak .111 hitting percentage and only 28 kills on the night.
