A house fire that occurred at approximately 6:40 p.m. at 321 Crane Ave. in west Ames left one house damaged and no people injured on Monday night.

Paul Sandoval, deputy chief with the Ames Fire Department, said firefighters responded to a 911 call made by a neighbor who reported smoke and fire billowing out of the garage.

“The majority of the damage was done to the garage area, but the entire house seems to have suffered major smoke damage,” Sandoval said. “The house was unoccupied other than one dog and one cat. The dog is being treated and the cat has not been found yet. The occupants said they will be relocating.”

The owners of the property refused to comment at the scene.

Cathy Harris, who lives across the street from the damaged house and made the call to 911, said that at approximately 6:20 p.m. she heard a loud popping sound through her window.

“It was a loud sound — like fire crackers,” Harris said. “I ran outside after calling and all I could see was smoke. I heard someone yelling there was a dog in the house, and I think they tried to break out windows, but I’m not sure. I couldn’t see past the tree.”

The dog that was present in the home, named Ophelia, received oxygen from firefighter Shawn Bayouth on the front lawn. The dog remained unresponsive but breathing, for several minutes. After receiving more oxygen, the dog was alert and walking around.
