FINAL SCORE: 34-17, Cyclones

9:58 4th Quarter: Iowa State jumped out to a 17-point lead after a 42-yard touchdown pass from Austen Arnaud to Marquis Hamilton mid-way through the fourth quarter.

With two receivers split wide to either side of Arnaud, Hamilton ran a fade route toward the end zone and made the over-the-shoulder catch to cap a four-play, 73-yard scoring drive that took just a minute and 11 seconds off of the clock.

The Cyclones are up 34-17.

0:00 3rd Quarter: The Cyclones will take a 27-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

After Iowa State notched a 50-yard field goal, the defense held the Bison to a three-and-out.

Iowa State will retain possession at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

1:27 3rd Quarter: Iowa State’s Grant Mahoney put the Cyclones on the board again in the 3rd quarter with a 50-yard field goal to make the score 27-17 in favor of the Cyclones.

Mahoney’s kick, the longest of his career, capped a seven-play, 25-yard scoring drive.

3:26 3rd Quarter: The Bison answered the call with a 73-yard, 10-play scoring drive, capped by a 15-yard strike from Nick Mertens to Matt Veldman to make the score 24-17.

The drive came just after a scoring drive from the Cyclones, and marked the first time the Bison scored without a play longer than 30 yards.

8:31 3rd Quarter: The Cyclones put up a quick-strike score early in the third quarter when quarterback Austen Arnaud connected with Marquis Hamilton for a 39-yard touchdown.

Hamilton ran a route to the middle of the field, and then out ran the Bison defense after making the catch to give Iowa State the 24-10 lead.

The 65-yard drive took just two minutes and 18 seconds, making it the quickest scoring drive of the night for the Cyclones.

0:00 2nd Quarter: The Cyclones capped the second quarter with a 57-yard field goal attempt by Grant Mahoney that fell several yards short.

Iowa State got the ball back with 39 seconds to play in the first half, and could only manage to drive to the NDSU 40 yard line.

The first half ended with the Cyclones leading 17-10.

0:46 2nd Quarter: With the help of a 36-yard pass to running back Pat Paschall, North Dakota State got back within a touchdown with a 39-yard field goal by Shawn Bibeau.

The Bison drove 47 yards in one minute and 15 seconds off the clock.

2:06 2nd Quarter: Iowa State expanded their lead with a 38-yard field goal from Grant Mahoney.

The Cyclones had good field position after a 60-yard kick return from David Sims, but the ensuing drive stalled out after seven plays and only 9 yards.

4:21 2nd Quarter: The Bison got on the board mid-way through the second quarter with a one-yard run from running back Pat Paschall.

The Paschall run was set up by a 42-yard reverse that wound up at the one yard line.

The three-play drive took just over a minute.

14:23 2nd Quarter: Quarterback Austen Arnaud capped off an 80-yard scoring drive with a five-yard touchdown run with 14:23 to play in the second quarter.

Arnaud took the snap and weaved his way through the offensive line and into the end zone to give the Cyclones a 14-0 lead.

The drive took just over three minutes, meaning Iowa State’s two scoring drives have combined for just over six minutes of possession time.

0:00 1st Quarter: North Dakota State drove the ball all the way to the one yard line with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter, before senior linebacker Jesse Smith forced a fumble by NDSU quarterback Nick Mertens.

Mertens tried a quarterback keeper to the left side before losing the ball, giving the Cyclones their first takeaway of the new season.

The Cyclone offense then marched down the field to the NDSU 38 yard line with the aid of a 15-yard pass interference penalty on the Bison, and then a 20-yard screen play to Alexander Robinson.

The first quarter ended with the Cyclones leading 7-0.

11:50 1st Quarter: The Cyclones drove 81 yards on their first series of the Paul Rhoads era when junior running back Alexander Robinson took the ball 18 yards up the middle for the touchdown.

The 9-play drive started at the 19 yard line after safety David Sims fielded the opening kickoff.

Quarterback Austen Arnaud took the shotgun snap, turned and handed the ball to Robinson on the inside draw. The back had a large hole on the right side, and only had to drag one tackler into the end zone to cap the 3:10 drive.

The Cyclone defense forced the Bison into a three-and-out on their first series, bringing offensive coordinator Tom Herman’s high-speed offense back onto the field with just over 10 minutes to play.
