Jordan Wickstrom —

The Cyclones traveled to Austin this past weekend hoping to play spoiler to a Texas team that won nine of its last 11 games.

Instead, the Cyclones were swept, losing 4-2 on Saturday and 5-1 on Sunday.

Saturday, in the first of the weekend’s two games, the Cyclones held a late lead over the Longhorns, but lost the game 4-2 in eight innings.

The Cyclones tacked on two runs during the fourth inning. Infielders Jacquelyn Beatty and Carrie Monroe each drove in runs with a pair of hits.

Sophomore pitcher Rachel Zabriskie allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning to cut the Cyclone lead in half, 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh Zabriskie allowed a lead-off home run to right fielder Courtney Craig, tying the game at two runs and forcing extra innings.

After walking the second hitter of the inning, Zabriskie retired the next Longhorn batter. The Cyclones lost the game with junior infielder Loryn Johnson’s two-run walk off blast.

Despite the loss, the Cyclones did find success against the 25th ranked team. Junior infielder Sydni Jones, along with Beatty and Monroe, led the way with two hits a piece as the Cyclones out hit the Longhorns 10-5.

Zabriskie was sharp, pitching 7.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out seven and walking one.

On Sunday, the Cyclones again had difficulty scoring runs. Junior infielder Courtney Wray was the only Cyclone to drive in a run and Iowa State fell to Texas, 5-1.

The game was tied at one run until the Longhorns rallied in the fourth for four runs.

For the second straight day, Craig was able to lead off an inning with a home run. The scoring was capped off by a three-run double off the bat of senior first baseman Desiree Williams.

Although the Cyclones out hit Texas they still could not come up with the timely hits. Iowa State had one run on eight hits while Texas had five runs on six hits. Iowa State also committed only one error this weekend while Texas committed four.

Zabriskie struggled through five innings of work on Sunday. Despite allowing just five hits, she surrendered five runs while walking five and striking out three.
