SOFTBALL:Cyclones settle for split

It was a tale of two games this weekend during Iowa State’s road series against Texas A&M.

Iowa State’s sophomore pitcher Rachel Zabriskie went from looking un-hittable on Saturday to looking very vulnerable on Sunday.

One day after tossing a complete game, four hit shut out and leading Iowa State to a 3-0 victory, Zabriskie lasted just two innings while giving up four runs on six hits in a 9-1 loss.

Iowa State was only able to collect nine hits over the two-game series, with five hits coming on Saturday and four coming on Sunday.

During Saturday’s game, junior infielders Amanda Bradberry and Sydni Jones each collected two hits while combining to drive in all three runs.

Jones also hit her fifth home run of the season on Saturday, giving her 14 for her career and moving her one home run away from tying for fourth on the ISU all-time career home run list.

Sunday’s game was a different story.

Jones was able to collect another hit but the Cyclones were unable to get much of anything going offensively.

Defensively the Cyclones struggled in the field with three errors after playing an errorless game on Saturday.

Zabriskie and fellow pitcher Lauren Kennewell each gave up an unearned run a piece during Sunday’s game. Those two runs helped to end the game early as the Cyclones would be mercy-ruled in five innings.

The Cyclones are now 23-27, 5-11, but the split keeps them alive in the hunt to move up in the Big 12 standings. With Nebraska improving to 8-8 in the Big 12 this weekend, the Cyclones cannot finish any higher than sixth in the Big 12. They currently find themselves in ninth with two games left against a Big 12 opponent, Kansas.
