MEN’S TRACK: Last Chance meet final shot for NCAA Indoor championship

In track and field, there are two standards for making the NCAA meet: automatic and provisional.

Automatic is exactly what it says — you will be guaranteed a spot at nationals.

Provisional qualification is a little more complicated, however. As one provisionally qualifies, he or she is placed on a list of other NCAA competitors who have also met that standard. The officials then choose a number of athletes with the top times or throws, and those competitors go to the Championship.

This weekend is the last chance to qualify for the competition.

Quite a few Iowa State men have provisionally qualified for this year’s NCAA Championships. Among those are Goar Marial and Kiel Uhl in the 5,000-meter run, Zac Brouillette in the weight throw, Luke Pinkelman in the shot-put, and James Galvan and Elphas Sang in the 800-meter run.

One athlete on the roster who has yet to provisionally or automatically qualify is Big 12 mile runner-up Hillary Bor.

“He is capable of running under four minutes,” coach Corey Ihmels said. “And he is ready to.”

Bor said his strategy this weekend at the Last Chance Meet will not change, even though this could be his last mile of the indoor season.

“It isn’t about who wins, it’s about who runs the qualifying time, so we just go out there and run as hard as we can,” Bor said.

Bor’s best time in the mile this season is a 4 minutes, 4.58 seconds, which was run at the ISU Classic. Provisional qualifying time is 4:04.00 and automatic qualifying is 3:59.50.

Bor is close to running the provisional time, but he thinks he can run an automatic time.

“Last year I ran 4:03, and I am stronger this year, so I feel I can go even four minutes flat.”

Marial and Uhl will be running at Notre Dame this weekend, where they will face stronger competition in their events.
