The ISU swimming and diving team has extra incentive to beat Nebraska this weekend: it’s senior day.

Beyond that, swimmers believe the 1 p.m. match with the Huskers should be an exciting all-around meet.

“I think that it is a really close match between us two teams in nearly every event,” junior swimmer Abby Glaser said.

The last time the Cyclones saw Nebraska was early this season at the Nebraska Invitational, where the Cyclones finished in fourth place out of nine teams. Nebraska wasn’t far behind as it finished fifth, little more than 100 points behind Iowa State.

This time around it is only Iowa State and Nebraska squaring off head-to-head, so expect a closer finish than a 100-point deficit.

“These two teams basically are mirror images of each other,” coach Duane Sorenson said. “Both teams’ top times are nearly the same, so I expect this to be a close match. It’s going to come down to who wants it more.”

Saturday is also the team’s senior day. Seniors Marni Benson, Maddie Crawford, Kali Fryklund, Britt Samuelson, Lindsay Wegner and Krista Moyer will swim their last home meets.

“Senior day is always an emotional day,” Sorenson said. “Four years here go by so fast and its just an exciting meet to be a part of. Plus it is always a greet meet against Nebraska, so I expect the seniors to perform at a very high level.”

The Cyclones have been working very hard in practice this week to prepare for a tough opponent and technique is a top priority.

“A couple things that we have been focusing on is just bettering our techniques and remembering to do the best that we possibly can do,” Glaser said.

This team also sees this meet as a great preparation meet for the upcoming Big 12 Championship.

“I feel that this meet will be a great way of showing us how we compare to Nebraska head to head,” Sorenson said. “We are just going to have to keep our composure.”
