VOLLEYBALL: Johnson rewarded with salary increase after tourney runs

Kayci Woodley —

Home attendance, NCAA tournament play and season records are just some of the things head coach Christy Johnson has elevated during her time at Iowa State.

Now her pay will be elevated as well.

Johnson’s career record at Iowa State is 78-53, a dramatic increase from the 13-167 record in conference play Johnson had to build from.

Johnson signed a five-year contract with the Cyclones to continue the legacy she has started.

In the fall of 2008, Johnson led the Cyclones to the Round of Eight in the NCAA Tournament and finished 15th in national attendance.

Johnson shaped Big 12 Libero of the Year Ashley Mass, first-team AVCA All-Central Region pick Kaylee Manns and Big 12 All-Freshmen-team member Rachel Hockaday.

“It gives me confidence that I’m at the right place,” Johnson said. “It’s a great fit. I really love it here and we have great support from our administration.”

Johnson knew something big was going to happen after the holiday season. Athletics director Jamie Pollard and senior associated athletics director Callie Sanders had talked with Johnson prior to the holidays about discussing her future at Iowa State and what they could do to support the team.

“I guess I knew that something would be in the works after the season ended,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s annual base compensation will increase by $10,000 each year.

She will earn $130,000 next season and the total base compensation for the five-year plan is $750,000.

“Along with all the things we’ve achieved in the last couple years, it’s just been a pleasant surprise,” she said.

Johnson attributes the continual rise of the program to hard work by the staff, players and the recruiting system.

“It just makes me even more excited to be here and to keep building the program,” Johnson said.
