Lt. Gov. Patty Judge and the Iowa Pride Network will celebrate Iowa’s third annual Gay Straight Alliance Day on Tuesday in Des Moines.

Judge will address community members and supporters at 6 p.m. at the Ritual Cafe, 1301 Locust St.

The purpose of the day is to honor students and teachers working to end discrimination, violence and homophobia against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in Iowa schools, according to a news release.

Gay-straight alliances are organized by students and teachers to provide a safe haven for LGBT students at schools, according to the Iowa Pride Network Web site. In schools that have a gay-straight alliance, according to the Web site, one out of four students is less likely to be verbally harassed because of gender or sexual orientation.
