The Cyclones put up a fight but fell short Friday night at Hilton Coliseum, losing to the Nebraska Cornhuskers 195.550-194.775.

One reoccurring theme with the Cyclones this meet was improvement. The Cyclones improved a lot on bars from last weekend’s meet vs. Missouri. ISU had a 47.825 against Missouri and this week had a 48.925.

“We did improve a lot. We still have a ways to go before the end of the season,” said head coach Jay Ronayne. “We’re trying to take care of the little mistakes — vault was better this week but still not good enough.”

Senior Jasmine Thompson had a rocky start with a 9.075 after a fall on her vault landing. She came back with a 9.850, 9.825, 9.800 to finish the meet.

“With that fault, I don’t know, it’s just been going really well in practice but when we come here I’m just changing really slight things when I compete. It’s a little nerves, I guess, but I’ll get it, that’s the last time you’ll see that,” Thompson said.

The Cyclones focused on taking their routines from practice and performing them during competition the same way they do in practice.

For the first rotation the Cyclones kicked off on vault and the Cornhuskers on bars. The Cyclones were tagging close behind with a 48.850-48.350. The Cyclone scoring was lead by Megan Barnes with a 9.775. The Cornhuskers were lead by Kassandra Nathe and Brittney Williams, tied with a 9.825.

On the second rotation, Nebraska and Iowa State switched events. At the end of the second rotation the Cyclones crept up on the Huskers by .10. Junior Jody McKellar scored a career high 9.850 on the bars. McKellar’s previous high was 9.800.

“Last week at practice went really well, So we just had a lot more confidence I think,”  McKellar said. “Individually on bars I just swing like I do in the gym. I try to get myself in practice atmosphere and that helped a lot.”

Cyclones moved to the beam and the Huskers took the floor for the third rotation. Even with the Cyclones looking a little wobbly on beam, they were able to come out with a 48.750. The Cornhuskers, however, ended with a 48.975 on floor. The Cyclones leading beam scorer was Thompson with a 9.825.

For the final rotation the Cyclones moved to the floor and the Huskers mounted the beam. The Cyclones had their chance to show their attitude on the floor but fell short with a 48.750 against the Huskers 48.850. The Cyclones were lead by Katie Sweetin with a 9.825.

The Cyclones will be on the road next week at Auburn.
