VOLLEYBALL: Mass named Big 12 Libero of the Year

Matt Gubbels –

After being named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week four times this season, ISU sophomore libero Ashley Mass was named Libero of the Year on Monday.

The 2008 conference awards and all-conference teams were announced one day after the Cyclones were selected to their third straight NCAA Tournament.

Iowa State had two players named to the all-Big 12 first team, two received all-conference honorable mentions and one player was named to the Big 12 all-freshmen team, which are the most awards the Cyclones have ever received.

Sophomore outside hitter Victoria Henson and junior setter Kaylee Manns were both first team honorees. Henson led the team and was third in the Big 12 this season with 4.09 kills per game. Manns was second in the conference and was seventh in the nation at 11.71 assists per set and was also second on the team with 2.61 digs per set.

Mass and senior middle blocker Jen Malcom received honorable mention for the Cyclones. Mass averaged a Big 12-leading 5.12 digs per set and begins the NCAA Tournament just 32 digs shy of the single-season school record. Malcom will likely end her career as the single match-, season- and career-hitting percentage leader for Iowa State.
