World AIDS week strives to raise awareness

This week is World AIDS Week. Here are some of the things Iowa State is doing in observance of the week.

Monday:

Monday’s theme is Day Without Art. It is officially World AIDS Day. Many works of art will be covered on campus and around Ames. The day will represent what the world would be like without art or artists. The first Day Without Art took place in 1989. There will also be a lunch with sexpert Ray Rodriguez at noon in the Maintenance Shop.

Tuesday:

Tuesday’s theme will be Day of Hope. There will be a AIDS Memorial Quilt Exhibit in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. The exhibit will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will also be a lecture presented by “Journey of Hope” at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Children will speak about their experience with HIV/AIDS as well as read poetry, sing and put on skits.

Wednesday

Wednesday’s theme will be Day of Remembrance. The AIDS Memorial Quilt Exhibit will be on display in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Thursday

Thursday’s theme will be Day of Awareness. A lecture will be given by Dr. Mohammad Jaber Kabbesh, local Infectious diseases doctor, and Amy Noynaert, a representative from the American Red Cross Central Iowa Chapter, who will discuss local and global issues about HIV and AIDS. The lecture will be at 7 p.m. in the Cardinal Room of the Memorial Union.

Friday

Friday’s theme will be Day of the Arts. A number of exhibits will be on display around campus, as well as theater, film, music and dance performances.

Saturday

Saturday’s theme will be Day of Activism. The week will culminate with the AIDS Walk that will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Lied Recreation Center. Registration is available on AccessPlus.

Free condom and red ribbon distribution from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day this week at the MU Booth. On Wednesday and Thursday there will be free HIV testing at the Thielen Student Health Center.
