Popular tailgating lot closed

Olive Court, Iowa City’s popular tailgating area long used by Hawkeye and Cyclone fans alike will not be available anymore.

The property has been sold to a developer and will no longer be open for tailgating.

Olive Court is located less than a half-mile from the stadium.

The rezoning has forced up to 800 cars to find a new location to park for this season’s games.

Prior to the Hawkeyes’ season opener against Maine, measures were taken to zone off the area to alert people the lot is now closed.

“For the first game, we had it barricaded with no trespassing signs up around the whole area,” University Heights Police Chief Ron Fort said. “For the second game [against Florida International], there really wasn’t really enough traffic coming through that area for measures to be taken.”

The in-state rivalry game tomorrow promises to be a different story.

“The no trespassing signs will be up as well as the barricades,” Fort said. “If I need to, I will have cones put up around the area too.”

Fort also wanted to warn any trespassers that they could face up to 30 days in jail and a $100 fine if they damage any property during the act of criminal trespassing.

The closure forced the majority of people who tailgated at Olive Court to move to areas such as Melrose Court and the Myrtle Street Lodge. As for Iowa State fans, Fort suggests that the best option for parking would be at the Finkbine Golf Course or parking areas in nearby Coralville and taking the Hawkeye Express.
