Iowa State soccer failed to complete its sweep of in-state rivals, losing 3-2 to Iowa in front of a home crowd of 884 people.

Both teams entered the game having defeated Drake and Northern Iowa earlier in the season.

The Cyclones fought hard to be in-state champions but came up just a little bit short.

“We were being aggressive and trying to play quickly,” said sophomore midfielder Jordan Bishop.

The first half of the game was sloppy for the Hawkeyes, who made a lot of unforced errors. The Hawkeyes also had seven fouls in the first half — with four in the first 15 minutes, including a yellow card given to Iowa midfielder Alex Seydel.

The Cyclones took advantage of Iowa’s sloppy play to taking a 1-0 lead on Bishop’s first goal of the season in the 26th minute.

Even though the Hawkeyes outshot the Cyclones 8-3 in the first half, most of their shots were from outside the box, never seriously troubling goalkeeper Ann Gleason.

“We played very technical soccer [in the first half],” Bishop said.

In the second half, the roles reversed.

Iowa State came out of halftime flat, allowing the Hawkeyes to score twice in the first six minutes. Iowa scored again 12 minutes later to go up 3-1.

“We need to work on having more energy in the second half,” Bishop said.

The Cyclones’ loss of energy could have been due to the team’s attitude at the end of the first half.

“We were given a great halftime speech, but it seemed like no one listened to it,” Bishop said.

Coming out of the locker room, the Cyclones seemed lost on the field. Iowa State looked confused on defense as Iowa scored its first goal and only minutes after, scored their second.

After the third goal by Iowa, the Cyclones began to pick up play again. With 3:40 remaining, Mary Kate McLaughlin scored off a corner kick by Bishop.

After McLaughlin’s goal, Iowa State was pushing to tie up the game but a steal from Iowa allowed the Hawkeyes to run out the clock.
