With the win against Northern Iowa two weeks ago, the ISU women’s soccer team is one-third of its way to sweeping the state.

The Cyclones will try to complete the sweep this weekend as they host Drake on Friday and Iowa on Sunday.

In order to take both games this weekend, the Cyclones coaching staff decided to focus on fundamentals.

“We’re going back to the basics with defending,” said coach Wendy Dillinger. “We’re reworking some moves from preseason.”

As players return from injury, the team is slowly becoming whole again. Junior midfielder Casey Bothwell is back from an undisclosed injury for the first full weekend.

“It feels great to be back,” Bothwell said. “Injuries make you mentally tougher and I’m excited for the weekend.”

In last weekend’s game against North Dakota State, Bothwell had her first goal after returning from being injured. Bothwell has been working on many things since returning.

“I’m working on my fitness and getting back in shape. I want to get back into my role as playmaker and captain,” Bothwell said.

The Cyclones have also been working on consistency and playing as a team.

“We’re working on shape and movement, finishing and gaining confidence around the goal,” Dillinger said.

If the Cyclones want to be in-state champions they will have to play well both Friday and Sunday, which has been a problem this season. Last Sunday, Iowa State gave up a lead, and lost to South Dakota State 2-1 in double overtime.

“[Last] Sunday was a real eye opener. You can’t take a lead for granted,” Dillinger said.
