Cyclones split squad for the weekend

For the second weekend in a row, the Iowa State track and field program will be in two different places.

The Cyclones will be split between the Sun Angel Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University, while those not making the journey to Tempe will be heading to Des Moines for the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake University.

Both meets will provide the Cyclones valuable experiences and opportunities. The members heading to the Jim Duncan Invitational will get to run on the blue track at Drake Stadium, which will host the Drake Relays at the end of the month.

Those heading to the Sun Angel Invitational compete against a solid field in warmer weather and be given a chance to run a time good enough to qualify them for the NCAA regional meet hosted by the University of Nebraska at the end of the season.

The Cyclones will, for the second weekend in a row, be running with Jenna Caffrey, who is coming off an injury that forced her to redshirt the indoor season.

Caffrey, a national qualifier during her freshman year, returned to action last week at the MSU Big Bear Invitational and won the 100-meter hurdles.

“She has been gone for so long,” sprint coach Ronnie Williams said. “She is obviously a centerpiece to what we’re doing here. It was exciting to see her get out there and compete and get to run again. We saw some good things and some typical things that we go to work on, being her first time out – you can tell she was excited to get out there and compete.”
