The ISU women’s track and field team opened its outdoor season Friday at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, Mo., on a weekend when most would’ve preferred running indoors.

“The conditions were rough, the weather was cold and all the kids came and competed very well,” said assistant coach Blake Boldon in a press release. “It is a sign of good things to come.”

Junior Molly Lohry, running her first season of collegiate track after a year on the ISU soccer team, may have provided the biggest surprise of the weekend for the Cyclones. Lohry clocked a career-best time of 2 minutes, 27.14 seconds in the 800-meter run. Her time was good enough for second place in the event. Lohry also teamed up with Erin Penticoff, Kaylee Small and Kellien Oettle to take first place in the 4 x 800-meter relay, with a time of 9 minutes, 38.52 seconds.

Lashawn Wright continued her momentum from a strong indoor campaign and placed fourth in the 200-meter dash. Wright ran a time of 24.63 seconds for the Cyclones.

Paige Ties also made an impressive debut for the Cyclones in the 5,000-meter run, taking third place with a time of 17 minutes, 32.21 seconds.

Coach Corey Ihmels was excited with the results and is looking forward to the rest of the season.

“I’m excited to get the outdoor season started and hopefully to get to compete in some better conditions as the season progresses,” Ihmels said in a press release. “Next week we’ll be getting our distance runners to a top-notch meet at Stanford and getting our sprinters and throwers into some big meets in the next few weeks.”
