Women throwers shine in team’s cross-country jaunt

The ISU women’s track and field team was well-represented in meets throughout the country this weekend. The team competed in three meets in California along with the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City.

The throwers had a big weekend out west as freshman Britta Christofferson hit the NCAA regional-qualifying mark in the shot put. Christofferson tossed a career-best 47 feet, 9.75 inches, to take home first place at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. – the first victory in her young college career. Also performing well in the shot put was Amy Waggoner. The junior was able to place third with her throw of 45 feet, 1.75 inches.

While the throwers were performing well on the West Coast, Jenna Caffrey was tearing up the track at the Iowa Invitational in Iowa City. The sophomore, running in just her third meet of the year, picked up her second win of the season in the 100-meter hurdles. Caffrey ran a time of 14.27 seconds to pick up the victory. Caffrey missed the regional-qualifying mark by 0.35 seconds.

“I think, overall, it was the best performance she has had all year,” said sprint coach Ronnie Williams. “She ran into a negative headwind. I think she is really close to putting up a good time and running really fast.”

Lashawn Wright won her prelim in the 100-meter dash, but was held out of the final due to poor weather and track conditions.

“Lashawn is fine – she ran well in the prelims,” Williams said. “She was a little sore coming into the meet and after the prelims. The conditions weren’t the greatest, and we just wanted to be safe.”

The Cyclones will head to the storied Drake Relays this weekend at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
