The 2008 Margaret Sloss Gender Equity Award Ceremony and Open House was held Thursday.

The award was given to those exercising efforts to improve equality on campus.

“Iowa State University isn’t doing so wonderful with the enrollment of females and retention of female students, staff and faculty,” said Penny Rice, director of the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center.

The following women were recognized for the award: Sharon Bird, member of the ISU ADVANCE Co-PI team and associate professor of sociology; Julie Snyder-Yuly, program coordinator of the women’s studies program and the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics; and Alissa Stoehr, graduate student in interdisciplinary graduate studies.

Snyder-Yuly, Bird and Stoehr all said they were honored to be nominated and to receive the award. It came as a surprise to Snyder-Yuly, since she claims to always be so quiet.

“We do this because we love it, and it’s really, really important to us – you never need to be awarded for things you love to do,” Snyder-Yuly said. “But it’s always nice to be noticed.”

Rice said Snyder-Yuly was “unsung but never unnoticed.”

Four scholarships were also given out following the award ceremony.
