Curtis Stinson is coming home.

Iowa Energy officials confirmed Thursday that the former ISU guard was acquired by the D-League team in a trade with the Austin Toros on Wednesday.

“We’re excited to have him,” said Iowa coach Nick Nurse.

Stinson, who split time with the Toros and Utah Flash this season, was averaging 5.3 points per game in seven games with the Toros.

The former two-time all-Big 12 performer for the Cyclones ranks fourth in career steals with 200 at Iowa State and forwent his final year of eligibility with the Cyclones in March of 2006 to enter the NBA draft. Stinson, however was not drafted and played overseas in Greece and spent time with the New Jersey Nets summer league team.

Stinson, who was unavailable for comment Thursday, arrived in Des Moines Wednesday night and participated in the Energy’s shoot around this morning.

“He’s a good player who’s certainly on the fringe of the NBA,” Nurse said.

Nurse added he expects Stinson to receive some playing time when the Energy host Fort Wayne tonight at Wells Fargo Arena at 7:30 p.m.

The 6’3, 215 pound guard, joins a list of players to join the Energy with Iowa connections. Former Iowa players Jeff Horner, Doug Thomas, and Adam Haluska also play on the Energy. Haluska spent one season with the Cyclones in 2002-03 before transferring to Iowa.

Nurse said throughout the season he’s attempted to bring in former Iowa State players, including Jared Homan and Will Blalock.

“I think there are a lot of Cyclone fans and this just gives them more of a reason to come and cheer on the Energy,” he said.

During a return to Ames in February to celebrate 100 years of Iowa State basketball, Stinson said he had no regrets over his decision.

“I can’t look back on that man,” Stinson said. “I’ve got to go forward. I had three great years that I played here. I was happy with the fan support, everybody – and I’d like to thank them for that.”
