Run, Lisa Run!

Lisa Koll just became the first ISU woman to achieve All-American status in two separate events in the same track and field meet.

Koll placed second in the 5,000-meter run and ninth in the 3,000-meter run on March 14-15 at the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas.

Koll’s time in the 5,000 of 15 minutes, 54.90 seconds beat the third-place finisher by almost four seconds. Sally Kipyego, of Texas Tech, won the event, as expected, with a time of 15:31.91. Kipyego’s time is the fastest time in the world this year.

“I went out at a 15:45 pace, running 75-second 400s,” Koll said in a press release. “I was going to do that whether anybody went with me or not. I knew [Kipyego] would take it out fast. That is her style. I kept touch with her through 1,500 meters. By 2,000 meters, I knew the pack was coming up on me. But I felt comfortable late and was able to answer with a surge of my own.”

Koll came back after her 5,000 performance Friday night to impress the national audience once again by placing ninth in the 3,000 on Saturday afternoon. Koll was ranked 16th heading into the event. She ran the race in a time of 9:15.58. The race was won by Susan Kuijken of Florida State, with a time of 8:58.14.

Coach Corey Ihmels was satisfied with Koll’s performance.

“Lisa did a tremendous job,” Ihmels said in a press release. “She ran nearly the whole 5,000 meters by herself, which is very difficult. She kept her composure the entire race. In the 3,000 we had a good plan and she battled hard. I told her that tonight’s race would hurt early on because of the quicker pace after running the 5,000 so fast last night. She was in the running for fourth or fifth starting the final lap of the 3,000 event after giving her all last night.”

Koll was the only Cyclone woman to compete at the Nationals, but her performances garnered ISU eight points – good for a 25th-place finish out of 62 teams.
