Women’s basketball loses momentum

What little momentum the Cyclones had in their unraveling season was squandered in Lawrence in a nail-biting turnaround in the last few minutes of their game against Kansas in Lawrence.

The Jayhawks defeated the Cyclones, 53-50, after Iowa State led, 45-40, with four minutes remaining in the game, but Kansas used a 13-5 from that point to seal the victory. The Cyclones scored only seven points in the final seven minutes.

The game gave Kansas its second conference victory, which places them just below Iowa State in the Big 12 standings at 2-6 and 13-8 overall. The Cyclones are now 2-5 in the league and 13-7 overall.

Only six players saw any significant playing time for the depleted Cyclones, while the Jayhawks rotated 10 players.

True freshman Kelsey Bolte continued her tear through the conference, scoring 13 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

Point guard Alison Lacey led the team with 23 points, including four three-pointers in 40 minutes of play.

Krysten Boogaard outdid both Bolte and Lacey, scoring 20 and boarding 12 for Kansas and hitting the game-clinching lay-up with 24 seconds remaining.

The Cyclones tried to get a three off in the final 24 ticks, but the Jayhawks’ lockdown defense prevented it.

The game was an offensive struggle for both teams.

In the first half alone, the teams combined for 26 turnovers. Halfway through the second half, the score was only 33-27.

Kansas remains 11th in the conference with the win, and the Cyclones find themselves tied for 8th with Texas Tech. The Cyclones will begin a three-game home stand against the Red Raiders on Wednesday. They will also take on Missouri and the Kansas State Wildcats.
