Scout for Cavs takes notice of ISU players Wednesday

Apparently, opponents weren’t the only ones who took note of freshman Craig Brackins’ 33-point, 8-for-10 3-pointer barrage last Saturday against Baylor.

An NBA scout with the Cleveland Cavaliers was in attendance for the Cyclones’ win over Missouri on Wednesday night, and while he claimed he “wasn’t looking at anyone in particular,” the first player he inquired about gave it away.

“That Brackins is a pretty good player, huh?” he asked.

Brackins wasn’t the only Cyclone to catch his eye, however.

After a play in which both senior Rahshon Clark and sophomore Wesley Johnson rose above the rim for a rebound, those two leapt to his attention.

“That Clark and Johnson both are hell of athletes,” he said.

After noticing their athleticism, the scout wondered about their shooting ability.

After watching Johnson handle the ball, he was surprised to find out the 6-foot-7 guard had played power forward for the Cyclones last year.

Cowboys Come to Town

Iowa State is 32-13 against Oklahoma State in Ames and 20-10 since Hilton Coliseum opened. During the Cowboys’ last visit to Hilton, the Cyclones emerged victorious with a 68-52 win in February 2006. Oklahoma State leads the all-time series, 57-51, and has won eight of the last nine.

Milestone weekend

Clark needs just four points Saturday against Oklahoma State to join the Cyclones’ 1,000-point club. He will join 25 other Cyclone greats in the club, which includes former Cyclone greats Jeff Grayer, Barry Stevens, Fred Hoiberg, Marcus Fizer and Jake Sullivan, to name a few.

“I think anybody that watches us play knows what he means to our team. He gets put-backs, and he’ll stick some jump shots,” coach Greg McDermott said of Clark. “Rahshon wants to do whatever he can to help us win, and in my eyes that’s the sign of a true leader.”

Clark has a couple other milestones in reach this weekend.

If he can come up with two steals, he will be the first player in school history to rank in the top 10 in steals, blocks and 3-pointers made.

Double-figure Johnson

Johnson has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games, dating back to Dec. 19, against Texas Southern, when he went scoreless. Johnson led the Cyclones in scoring on Wednesday against Missouri, tallying 20 points to go along with his season-high 11 rebounds. He leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.1 points per game.

Race to 40

The Cyclones have typically won the race to the 40-point mark this season, beating their opponent in 15 of their 17 games. When they reach the 40-point mark first, the Cyclones have had success with an 11-4 record. The only teams to beat Iowa State to 40 points this season were Drake and Bradley, both in the Missouri Valley Conference.
