UPDATE: Seniors’ careers end on down note, lose to Kansas

Lawrence, Kan.-It’s not the ending Bret Meyer envisioned, but it was still a good ride. Meyer, Iowa State’s all-time leader in total offense, wrapped up his Cyclone career Saturday as Iowa State (3-9, 2-7) fell to No. 4 Kansas 45-7.

“It’s emotional but at the same time you have fun,” Meyer said. “I’ve been able to start 48 straight games so I can’t really complain about too much, win or lose.”

Start number 48 wasn’t his best. The senior from Atlantic completed 16-of-28 passes for 103 yards. Meyer whose 50 touchdowns rank him first among all-time quarterbacks, failed to get the Cyclones into the end zone. Iowa State’s lone touchdown came on a 6-yard run by Alexander Robinson with 3:54 remaining in the second quarter. By then, Kansas had already built a 21 point lead.

“They made some big plays early on and I think they kind of got a lot of momentum and it just kept rolling for them,” said senior wide receiver Todd Blythe. “We weren’t able to overcome some of the stuff that they were doing.”

Much of the stuff included what sophomore quarterback Todd Reesing did. The Jayhawk’s quarterback connected with junior Dexton Fields on touchdown passes of 17 and 16-yards in the first quarter. Reesing later found receiver Marcus Henry for a 51-yard pass to increase the lead to 21. He finished the day completing 21-of-26 passes for 253 yards and four touchdowns.

After facing off against quarterbacks Colt McCoy from Texas and Chase Daniel from Missouri, Cyclones’ coach Gene Chizik said he’s near the top of the list of some of the best he’s seen this season.

“He manages the game great and he does all the things that got them into this spot,” Chizik said. “He’s lumped in there with a bunch of other great ones we’ve played.”

Who isn’t lumped in there is the entire Kansas team. With their win against Iowa State coupled with No. 2 Oregon’s loss earlier in the week, the Jayhawks enter their final game of the season against Missouri next week as possible contenders for a National Championship title.

“It’s unfolding the way we want, but like I said, we have to take care of business and take it one week and one step at a time and let it come to us,” said junior quarterback and wide receiver Kerry Meier. “If we take care of our business, things will fall into place for us.”

Despite how his final game ended, Blythe said he has no complaints. “It’s been a fun ride for us,” Blythe said. “That’s for sure.”
