Reid makes goal-finding shots

What a weekend.

The ISU soccer team started off the weekend with a victory over the No. 16 Oklahoma State Cowgirls on Friday, the highest-ranked team the Cyclones have beaten in their 12-year history. Coach Rebecca Hornbacher became the career leader in wins in Cyclone history, garnering wins 42 on Friday and 43 on Sunday against Oklahoma. The Cyclones got off to a 2-0 start in the Big 12 – the best start in the program’s history.

Add on two goals over the weekend for Elise Reid and consecutive shutout victories for goalie Ann Gleason, and one would think the Cyclones are in a zone – that is, until you ask them.

“Overall, things are clicking, but I think we were a little bit sloppy,” Hornbacher said. “There are some things we need to clean up, but we were able to get another shutout, so I think that’s a great thing. We will carry that into next weekend. We have a lot of things to work on this week, but, overall, we are getting better and better by the week.”

Even with the need for improvement, the Cyclones are 2-0 in the Big 12, already matching their conference win total from last year.

Reid scored in both games over the weekend and is on a tear, upping her total to five goals on the season after not scoring a goal in her freshman season on 51 shots.

“Elise is just hungry to score goals right now and looking to shoot,” Hornbacher said. “She has a great shot. She is able to contain her shot and put it right on aim. I am really happy for her and I hope she continues to do well for us, because she is very dangerous.”

Fellow sophomore Gleason was not to be outdone by her teammate, recording her third-straight shutout Sunday. Gleason attributes the shutouts to the work of her back line.

“I just try to be as focused as I can be the entire game,” Gleason said. “It’s a whole team effort. I wouldn’t be able to do it without the team. We are confident and really working well together.”

Not only did Gleason pick up her third-straight shutout, she got her first collegiate assist on a second-half goal by Brittanie Waddell in the game against Oklahoma.

“I had one this summer but never in college, so it’s very exciting,” Gleason said.

Gleason echoed the sentiments of Hornbacher on the need to improve on the season.

“We know there are things we definitely need to improve on going into the Texas game,” Gleason said. “There are things we did today that higher-ranked teams down the road would not let us get away with.”
