Career Fair: Use a checklist, bring everything

Marjorie Smith

The Career Day shuttle is departing in five minutes and you are scurrying around your room trying to round up all of your last-minute things. Career Day can be kind of intimidating, especially to you underclassmen, but if you follow the survival check list below, you should be able to walk into Hilton Coliseum with confidence and determination. Let’s check and make sure you have everything before you leave.

1. Resume and cover letter (you are going to want a lot of copies of both). Make sure your resume is printed on nice printing paper (not the same stuff you print lecture notes on).

2. Portfolio to put your resumes and cover letters in (it looks professional and keeps you organized through out the Career Fair).

3. Paper, pen and legal pad (employers may give you important information that you’ll want to remember later)

4. Informal business attire (dress pants, button-up shirt with collar, tie, skirts no higher than three inches above your knee)

5. Soft hands (you are going to be giving a lot of hand shakes, you don’t want to be the one with the chapped hands). Hand lotion works perfect in situations like these.

5. Gum or breath mints (you are trying to get an internship or a job, don’t scare them off with nasty morning breath from last Tuesday)

6. Confidence. If you forget your confidence at home, you might as well turn around and go pick it back up because without it, you won’t survive at the Career Fair.
