TobyMac’s ‘Portable Sounds’ can’t pick genre

Gospel artist tobyMac has a problem: His newest release, “Portable Sounds” is an amalgam of secular-inspired music and ambiguous lyrics.

At face value, he is the Christian version of Justin Timberlake and the first few songs reflect that.

However, he quickly switches his styles from Christian rap (an oxymoron?), to a bad Linkin Park imitation in the song “Ignition.”

Later in the album, tobyMac apparently decided he wanted to pursue careers in reggae, pop-punk, ’70s soul and radio-friendly rock. Unfortunately, none of the songs stand out as anything worth paying attention to and whatever message may have been in the lyrics is ultimately lost.
