The Hall of Fame class of 2007 will have a historic flavor to it. Three former Cyclone wrestlers will be inducted into the Cyclones Hall of Fame during a ceremony Saturday, the most ever for the sport.

“This one (vote) was a unique one because it was very heavily leaned towards wrestling and football,” said Ryan McGuire, Director of Special Events and Letterwinners.

The weekend long event will include nine former Cyclone athletes being inducted in the Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be ushered into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony tonight at the Gateway Center Hotel. Tickets for the event are no longer available to the

Fans will get a chance to see the entire class during half-time of the Cyclones’ game against Northern Iowa. Each member will be awarded with a medal and have a few minutes to give a speech.

The 2007 class, which includes two time football All-American football player Troy Davis, includes four football players, one football coach and one woman’s swimmer, Jenni Adams Keitges. McGuire, who has a vote in the process said Davis was an easy selection.

“I think his impact led to the later success that coach [Dan] McCarney had one Troy was gone,” he said.

McGuire said the committee, which includes 20 individuals ranging from members of the letterwinners club and historians, takes into account several aspects of each athlete, including what they did on and off the field. An athlete must receive at least 75 percent of the vote to be elected.

The Hall of Fame, which began in 1997, includes 103 inductees. McGuire said the committee meets twice during the spring and closely examines what each individual accomplished while at Iowa State.

“It begins with what kind of an athlete they were and what kind of success they had as a student,” McGuire said.

McGuire added that each athlete must have performed well in the classroom too.

“They certainly need to be someone that was in getting academic standing and was never in trouble,” he said.
