The ISU soccer team continued its early-season success at the UNLV Rebel Classic on Friday and Sunday.

The Cyclones defeated Nevada on Friday, 2-1. Leslie Hill scored the deciding goal in the 65th minute of play against the Wolfpack. Hill also had an assist on the Cyclones’ first goal scored by Casey Bothwell.

Goalie Ann Gleason had six saves for the Cyclones. The victory over Nevada tied coach Rebecca Hornbacher for first in all-time victories as an ISU coach with 41. She is currently tied with Cathy Klien.

Iowa State gave another strong defensive effort on Sunday as they played the Runnin’ Rebels of UNLV to a scoreless tie.

“Overall, it was an extremely solid defensive effort. I think Ann Gleason came up big,” Hornbacher said. “Our back line was strong throughout the game to preserve the shutout. [UNLV is] a tremendous team, and I think our team played very well today. It would’ve been great to get the win, but I’m proud of our team’s effort and battling for 110 minutes.”

Ann Gleason had seven saves in the shutout against the Rebels on their home field. The Cyclones improved to 4-1-2 on the season and will open Big 12 play this weekend against Oklahoma Sate on Friday and Oklahoma on Sunday. Both games will be played at the ISU Soccer Complex.
