New Cy-less logo revealed to public

Junior Jamie Olson likes the new uniforms, but has one question – where’s Cy?

“I like them, but Cy should be on there,” said Olson, a kinesiology major, after discovering Iowa State’s mascot will no longer be used on team uniforms.

Cy, voted the Most Dominant College Mascot on Earth this summer in an online poll conducted by CBS Sportsline’s Web site, is not featured in the new uniforms unveiled during a press conference Wednesday.

Instead, the uniforms include a new logo with a cardinal-colored “I” with a gold-colored “State” superimposed over it.

“Cy isn’t going away,” said athletics director Jamie Pollard. “We love Cy – Cy is a great mascot and we can effectively use Cy with our new landmark to be able to promote Iowa State athletics.”

The new logo, which was voted on by fans after a six-month design process, was created by Pollard with a committee that consisted of many ISU officials including football coach Gene Chizik and senior associate athletics director for communications Steve Malchow. Football uniforms displayed at the press conference showed an ISU home jersey with gold pants with red stripes along the sides. The red home tops include gold numbers and stripes along with Iowa State written across the front.

“I kind of like them,” said freshman Adam Ratzlaff, freshman in liberal arts and science-open option. “They’re old school.”

Malchow said during the development process he felt the best way to please fans would be to return the school colors of cardinal and gold.

After the Cyclones defeated the Hawkeyes wearing replica 1977 Peach Bowl jerseys, he said many fans favored the new schemes unveiled.

“That’s what this school was founded on, and generally when you take a historical approach to things, that’s well received,” Malchow said. “And I suspect that this will be too.”

While some fans may miss Cy, many enjoy the new look, which includes alternating red and gold pants to go with a white top away jersey.

“I think it’s a cool concept because all the other schools are going back to retro,” said Derek Jensen, freshman in pre-architecture.

Jensen wasn’t the only Cyclone fan who was happy to see Iowa State jump on the fashion craze.

“I’m personally a fan of the retro style,” said Matt Guetzko, senior in operations and supply chain management. “I really like it.”

Pollard said in the end, he hoped to combine the past 1977 Peach Bowl jerseys with the new look.

Despite not including Cy, Malchow said he expects criticism from fans, no matter what.

“Someone’s going to have a problem with what you decide,” Malchow said. “So the safest haven you can find would be to go back to your origins.”
