Student struck on bike

An ISU student was struck while riding his bike at the intersection of Lincoln Way and Beach Avenue on Friday afternoon.

Matthew Siclari, sophomore in veterinary medicine, was riding his bike in the crosswalk when a Ford F-150 ran a red light and struck the back of the bike, said Officer Brad Baker with the Ames Police Department.

Baker said that Siclari was taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center. Although Baker didn’t see a helmet at the scene, he said Siclari was responsive.

“The truck was trying to beat the light, [that’s] what witnesses are saying,” Baker said.

Benjamin Bakkum, sophomore in engineering, was in his room at Phi Kappa Theta when he heard a vehicle try to stop.

“You could tell right away what it was,” he said. “I came running down to see if they needed any more help.”

The posted speed limit on that stretch of Lincoln Way is 35 miles per hour. Baker said he didn’t know how fast the truck was going when it struck the back of the bicycle, however.

Baker said the driver was cited for running a red light. He also said he was filing an accident report.

Siklari declined to be interviewed and the status of his injuries were not released.
