Old School

A vintage look will be sweeping campus soon, as more students win the new 2007-08 intramural champion T-shirts.

Intramurals coordinator Linda Marticke finally gave in to the pressures of the graphic artist who designs the T-shirts and went with what is known as the “distressed” look in the fashion community.

“The last two years, the graphic artist has always given me a distressed design like this, and I always turned it down,” Marticke said. “This year, I decided I’d try and be a little more hip and go with it.”

And “hip” seems to be the consensus of the student body so far. Marticke tested the shirt design with students at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center over the summer and said most really liked it.

“When we got our first sample in, I took the shirt over to Lied and the students working [said], ‘Yeah; we like it,'” Marticke said.

Maryn Lally, junior in apparel merchandising, design and production, likes the new shirts too and offered her opinion.

“Compared to the old ones, I like them better,” Lally said. “I’m a big fan of the fading and distressing of the screen printing, and I like the old school Cy a lot better. He’s cooler looking.”

The old Cy trademark wasn’t available for intramurals to use until last year, and Marticke embraced the opportunity to use it again.

“We weren’t able to use the old logo in the past,” Marticke said. “I like it, though, because it’s something different. It’s hard to come up with different designs each year when you have to use the same bird.”

Laura Iannuzzi, senior in art and design, has a dream of one day being a buyer for a major retail company; she likes the old bird as well.

“I like the old school Cy. It ties in real well with the rest of the shirt and the vintage look,” Iannuzzi said. “The vintage look was gone for so long, and now it will be back again for a while, until fashion goes back into a modern, trendier look.” Iannuzzi said fashion goes around in circles, and the distressed design is on the cooler, more hip part of the circle now.

“My friend’s mom was a cheerleader for Iowa State many years ago, and now her shirt looks like this intramural shirt and I give her compliments all the time. It’s just more unique,” Iannuzzi said.

If there was one thing the design students could change, it would be on the back of the shirt, which also features a distressed look, along with a 150th anniversary logo. Both agreed that the particular intramural won should be acknowledged somehow, so everyone knows what you’re the champion of.

“I think it’d be really cool if the intramural that the person won had a star by it or was in bold on the back of the shirt,” Lally said.

It seems Marticke and the gang did a good job of designing this year’s shirt, and it makes her happy to make students happy.

“What will make me happy is if the students are like, ‘Whoa . this is cool,'” Marticke said.

If the fashion experts are any indication, Marticke will be a happy woman by the end of the year.
