WASHINGTON, D.C. &#8212 Residents of an affluent area of Des Moines rank first in the state for contributions to presidential candidates.

The Center for Responsive Politics, a nonprofit Washington, D.C.-based research group, analyzed political giving based on ZIP codes and found that Iowa’s 50312 made the most contributions so far this year. The area includes higher income neighborhoods in the hills just west of downtown Des Moines.

Those in the ZIP code gave most generously to former Gov. Tom Vilsack, who has since dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination. He received $16,900. Republican Mitt Romney placed second with $11,100, and Democrat Barack Obama was third with $9,301.

Residents of the area made $48,789 in contributions to presidential candidates. West Des Moines’ 50265 ZIP code placed second and Cedar Rapids’ 52403 came in third.

Nationally, the top ZIP code was in New York City, where upper east side residents contributed $4.5 million to candidates. About 65 percent of those contributions were to Democrats.
