Thursday night game time to conflict with classes, lower overall attendence

When Construction Engineering 380 meets Thursday, it may be a little emptier than normal.

The class, which prepares students for law procedures in construction, meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday nights. While some students will be taking notes, others will be taking a night off to prepare for Iowa State’s first football game of the year when the Cyclones kick off the 2007 season at 7 p.m.

“I’m always excited about the first game,” said Katie Brandt, senior in aerospace engineering.

Brandt, who is enrolled in the class, said she will skip out on the class to secure her spot in Jack Trice Stadium. A season ticket holder for four years, she said her professor was not going to punish students who missed class.

Regardless, she was going to the game.

“Tailgating and football are two of my favorite things,” she said.

Although Construction Engineering 380 will be in session, Textiles & Clothing 311 will not. The class, which runs from 5:10 to 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings, will postpone its second session of the semester for the game.

The leaders of the course, Ruth Glock, adjunct assistant professor of apparel, educational studies and hospitality mangaement, and academic advisers Chris Wise and Ann Thye, saw the conflict in the class schedule this summer and decided to meet a week later in the semester than planned.

“We thought it was going to cause a conflict for many of our students,” Thye said.

The eight-week class, will still get in its entire schedule and allow students to complete a unique assignment. Their first homework assignment was to go to the game and cheer on the Cyclones.

“I’m excited about the football game,” said Thye, who has tickets to the game. “It’s part of the culture and it’s part of being at ISU.”
