Regents to meet Thursday to continue U of I search

IOWA CITY – The Iowa Board of Regents has scheduled a meeting for Thursday as it continues its search for a new president at the University of Iowa.

The regents interviewed four finalists last week in hopes of finding a replacement for David Skorton, who left last year for Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.

The regents met in closed session on Sunday to review the candidates and a report from the presidential search committee.

The regents emerged from that meeting and announced they had not decided who should be the next president at Iowa.

Thursday’s meeting is set for 3 p.m. in the Richey Ballroom at the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.

The finalists are Charles Bantz, 57, a chancellor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; Mark Becker, 48, a provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of South Carolina; Philip Furmanski, 60, executive director for academic affairs at Rutgers University; and Sally Mason, 57, a provost at Purdue University.

The candidates also participated in on-campus interviews with faculty leaders.

The search committee presented an eight-page report to the Board of Regents, evaluating the candidates by administrative experience, academic reputation, fundraising experience, responses of the campus community, external references and summary evaluations.

David Miles, president pro-tem of the regents, would say little about the board’s progress.

“I can say that I’m certainly hopeful that something will happen this week,” he said.

Regent Bob Downer also was hopeful a decision would come soon.

“I think that we’re focusing on certain candidates as opposed to others,” he said.
