Injured shortstop out for the season with injured ankle

Only six games into the season, the ISU Baseball Club team may have already suffered their biggest loss of the season.

Shortstop and Daily staff writer Elliott Fifer dislocated his ankle in game one against the South Dakota Coyotes this weekend.

Fifer, who also bats leadoff, will miss the remainder of the season for the Cyclones.

“It’s a huge loss,” said club president and second baseman Bryan Scholar. “We’re going to have to shuffle some things around.”

Fifer suffered the injury in game one on Saturday against the Coyotes when he tried to reach first on a ground ball to the shortstop.

“I was just trying to beat it out and I kind of lunged to first to beat it out,” Fifer said.

Scholar said outfielder Drew Samuels will move into the position of shortstop. Even with the change, he said replacing Fifer’s presence will be nearly impossible.

“He’s one of our best hitters,” he said. “It’s going to take some production away. He’s a pretty good fielder too, so anytime you have to change shortstops, that’s going to affect lots through the course of the team.”

For Fifer, it’s a brutal ending to a short season, as the shortstop will spend the next two months in a cast.

“It’s probably the worst thing that could happen,” Fifer said. “I love to play baseball and to be out there.”
