Exposure to cold, rainy and windy conditions are a concern for authorities still searching for an Iowa State student who remains missing after search parties look eagerly for the student who was last seen early Saturday morning.

Abel Bolanos, sophomore in English, has been missing since about 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning when he was last seen leaving a party at 208 South Hyland. Bolanos was believed to be heading south on Hyland toward his residence hall, 2303 Wallace Rambo.

“We are concerned if he has been outside – exposure is certainly a concern,” said Gene Deisinger, Iowa State University Police commander.

Bolanos was described as last wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and brown shoes, which contribute to the concern of exposure since his disapperance. Last night’s temperatures dropped below 40 degrees and there have been wet and rainy conditions all weekend. Cold temperatures are also forecast for the rest of the week, with highs of 40 degrees after Tuesday.

“We have not located him or encountered anyone who has had contact or communication with him,” Deisinger said. “[Although] at this point, there are no indications of foul play. We have a person who left an off-campus gathering, believed to be heading back to his residence hall.”

It is also believed that Bolanos tried to gain entry into his Wallace residence, but was unable to because he didn’t have his keys.

“He did not have his keys with him and the building he lives in is access controlled. It does not appear that he was able to access [and] there is no evidence that he has been [in his room] recently,” Deisinger said.

The Iowa State Patrol put an aircraft up that has heat seeking capabilities and used that to search adjacent farmlands in the area of the Towers Sunday night between 11p.m. and 1 a.m.

“We did not get any hits off of that,” Deisinger said.

Other authorities also contributing to the search efforts are the ISU Police Division, ISU Parking Divison, Ames Police Department, Ames Fire and Rescue, Star 1Search, and Air patrol authorites.

The search has been limited to surrounding areas and has not yet taken a wider range. However, authorities are in communication with family from his home location in Illinois but do not have motive to travel outside the area to his hometown.

Missing person signs have been distributed all over campus and can be seen posted on doors of campus buildings.

“We are looking for anybody who has information about his actions, or his state of intentions over the weekend,” Deisinger said. “If there is anyone out there with information or if there is anyone we haven’t talked to yet and knows him, please contact us. [We are] looking for information from the public.”

As of right now, authorities encourage people to keep updated, but not to contribute personally to the search efforts. Authorites are the only people involved in the search however, “there may be a point in time where we ask the public for assistance in search efforts,” Deisinger said.

Cole Hallet, a close friend of Bolanos, said Bolanos’ family from Rolling Meadows, Ill., are currently in Ames and waiting for any information coming from the search efforts.
