Farmers’ Almanac predicts possibility of poor weather

With all the festivities planned for the upcoming Veishea 2007 celebration, what if bad, severe or just plain nasty weather “rains on the parade?”

The April 2007 Farmers’ Almanac forecasts that April 16 through April 23 in the north central states will be “pleasant at first, then turning unsettled, with showers spreading across the Rockies. Showers northern and central plains, then fair skies.”

But how accurate is the forecasting in the Farmers’ Almanac? William Gallus, professor of geological and atmospheric sciences, said the almanac isn’t a very reliable source.

“I don’t think it’s very accurate. They purposely word their predictions vaguely so that it is impossible to scientifically tell whether their claims are right or wrong,” Gallus said.

However, he did say “there’ll always be someone who said that they [Farmers’ Almanac forecasters] were right.”

Joelle Kline, Veishea Public Relations co-chairwoman and senior in journalism and mass communication, said the scheduled festivities will go as scheduled – no matter what.

“As a rule of thumb, the events will take place rain or shine,” Kline said. “Should there be severe weather, people will be sent to safe rooms in buildings.”
