ISU wrestler Kurt Backes was arrested and charged last Thursday with public intoxication.

According to police reports, Backes, 23, had difficulty walking and smelled of alcohol when coming into contact with officers at Sips, 124 Welch Ave.

Officers were initially dispatched at 1:40 a.m. to respond to an altercation at the bar. Backes had been asked to leave the establishment.

He was transported to the Story County Jail.

Backes and wrestling coach Cael Sanderson were unavailable for contact.

Backes recently completed his ISU wrestling career, finishing second at the NCAA Tournament less than a week prior to the arrest. He was a two-time All-American and two-time Big 12 champion.
