WOMEN’S TRACK: Koll, Williams capture titles; team sets 12 personal records

If the ISU women’s track coaches learned one thing this weekend, its that their Cyclones are not going to back down from anyone.

The step up in competition at the Iowa State Classic brought out the best in the Cyclones as they captured two individual titles and a school record, in addition to having four athletes set an NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark and earning 12 personal records.

Lisa Koll may have had the best weekend out of any Cyclone. Koll, a sophomore running only the second track meet of her college career, smashed the school record in the 5,000-meter run and dominated the field in the 3,000. Koll ran a time of 16 minutes, 25.96 seconds, good for second in the 5,000 and the fifth fastest time in the nation this season.

“I wanted to stay as I consistent as I could,” Koll said. “I’ve raced against a lot of these same people. I knew who was going to go out fast and who wasn’t.

“Ideally I wanted to run between 16:20 and 16:30, so I did exactly what I wanted to do. That should be a very good time to qualify me for nationals.”

Lisa Koll’s success did not stop there as she went on to win the 3,000 on Saturday, running the second fastest time in school history with 9:33.69, good enough for the provisional standard in the 3,000.

Not to be outdone, Rebecca Williams won the 60 hurdles at the Iowa State Classic for the first time in her career. Williams, a senior who already reached the provisional mark earlier this season at the Husker Invite, ran a season best time of 8.38 seconds at the meet.

“Winning and being able to get through all three rounds really did help my confidence.” Williams said. “I’ve been consistent and once you get consistent in the championship phase that’s when you start to drop your time. I think that helped my confidence a lot.”

Sara Boisen also had a very strong performance. Breaking out of a small slump, Boisen captured second place in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:22.73, one of the fastest in the Big 12 this season. Boisen was the top collegiate performer in the event, finishing second behind former 200-meter world champion Anastasiya Kapachinskaya.

Senior Agata Kosuda made her season debut by taking the runner-up spot in triple jump with a jump of 41 feet, 10 inches. Kosuda is a former conference champion in the event and set the provisional mark with her leap at the Classic.

Freshmen Jenna Caffrey and Lashawn Wright also had an impressive weekend. Caffrey finished sixth in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.59 seconds. Caffrey became the third fastest hurdler in Cyclone history in the semifinals with a personal record time of 8.52 seconds. Wright also made it to the semifinals of the 60 dash and ran two personal records over the weekend in the 60 and 200 dashes.

Many other Cyclones achieved personal records, including Leia Jackson in the 60 and 400 dashes, Katie Paulson and Shaylyn Wiarda in the 800, and Amy Waggoner in the shot put.
