ISU volleyball sweeps Kansas

After its second two-game losing streak of the season, the ISU volleyball team is starting a streak of a different nature.

Iowa State swept the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday night in Lawrence, Kan. for its second win in a row and improved to 11-4 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12.

The Cyclone middle blockers gave the team a big lift, as junior Erin Boeve had 17 kills and senior Jessica Klein hit .474 with 10 kills. Boeve was also stellar on defense with a career-high seven digs.

Game one saw both teams hang tough before the Cyclones found themselves holding a slim lead, 29-28. Junior Lauren Cummings got the decisive kill to give Iowa State the win and a 1-0 lead. Boeve had six kills for Iowa State, which outhit Kansas, .196 to .183.

Game two saw more of the same as Boeve dominated. There was none of the drama from the first game, as the Cyclones cruised to a 30-22 win to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Kansas came out of the break determined and focused, opening game three with a 5-1 run. After closing the gap at 9-8, Iowa State scored five straight points to go up 13-9. The Jayhawks climbed back in it, tying the game up at 21-21, before Boeve took over. A pair of kills from the junior gave the Cyclones a 23-21 lead and they never looked back, winning 30-24 for the sweep.

The key to the match was a renewed defensive effort from Iowa State. The Cyclones has three players with double-figure digs, led by senior Nicole Lorenzen’s 14. Junior Laura Cady added 12 digs and freshman setter Kaylee Manns chipped in 10 digs to go along with her match-high 42 assists.

Iowa State continued its season-long domination at the net, outblocking Kansas, 11-6. Boeve and Klein led the way with three block-assists each.
