Freshman goalkeeper struggles in first games

Thirteen goals allowed in two games – that’s not the way any goalkeeper wants to begin a season, especially if you’re a freshman.

Freshman goalie Ann Gleason suffered through her second consecutive game Monday night, allowing four goals out of seven shots and saving three. She allowed nine against Notre Dame last weekend.

“We need to clean things up, and I need to do a couple of things better communication wise,” Gleason said.

The team isn’t losing confidence in its goalie – despite her rough start – and supported her all the way.

“It is always going to take a freshman goalie a little while. It’s a different style of play,” said junior Erin Witte. “It’s hard getting scored on that many times in two games, but we’re reassuring her in practice and throughout the game that it’s OK, and I know she’s going to come through.”

Coach Rebecca Hornbacher met with her goalie on the field after the game to discuss her performance and lift her spirits.

“I believe in her, and I think she just needs to know that,” Hornbacher said.

“I think that she does know that and she knows that her team believes in her too. She’s a freshman, and she has a learning curve, but there are no excuses and she’s not going to make any excuses either.”
