Berryman makes initial appearance

NEVADA – Former ISU football player Jason Berryman made his initial appearance in a Story County courtroom Monday, the first step in the county’s motion to have his probation revoked.

No date was set for the probation revocation hearing, but Berryman requested a court-appointed attorney. Once he secures counsel, county officials will set a date for the hearing.

Should Berryman’s probation be revoked, he faces the possibility of jail time and a fine of up to $1,000.

Berryman, 20, was cited by Ames police on Jan. 29 for being “on premises under age” at Club Element, 2401 Chamberlain St., a bar that serves alcohol. Following the incident, Berryman, the defensive MVP of the 2005 Houston Bowl, was kicked off the team.

Berryman was arrested in 2004 for punching an ISU student and stealing $4 and a cell phone. He spent 258 days in the Story County Jail and returned to the team four months after his release.

Judge William Pattinson suspended a 10-year prison term on the first-degree theft charge, but imposed the jail term on the assault charge and placed Berryman on probation for two years after his jail term.

“I have no comment because everything is up in the air,” Berryman said after the hearing Monday.
