CEDAR FALLS – The ISU men’s and women’s track teams won six events and placed in the top three in five others at the UNI Classic, their final tune-up before next weekend’s Iowa State Classic.

In a meet that saw a small number of competitors, both teams had success and first-time winners.

On the men’s side, freshman Eric Parker ran a personal best time of 8.14 in the 60-meter hurdles, taking the first victory of his young collegiate career.

“Definitely felt the best I’ve felt all year,” Parker said. “It was just good to actually get out there and run the best race.”

The men’s weight throw saw Kendall Fogle and Chase Madison finish first and second for the second week in a row, only this week it was Fogle taking the win with a distance of 18.3 meters.

“We had the weight throwers go one-two again,” said men’s coach Steve Lynn. “Kendall [Fogle] and Chase [Madison] reversed the order, Kendall [Fogle] won this time. He was over 60 feet, a good job.”

Winning the triple jump for the second weekend in a row was Tony Douglas with a distance of 15.21 meters. Neil Hines also set a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65 as he prepares to run the heptathlon next weekend.

Overall, Lynn said he felt good about the performances.

“It was a small meet for us, a small number of guys, but the people that came up did a good job,” Lynn said. “It was definitely worthwhile.”

On the women’s side, Katie Paulson won her first event as a Cyclone in the 600-meter dash, with a time of 1:38.78.

“It felt good, it felt smooth and relaxed,” Paulson said. “It was a good extra race to get in.”

Taking first in the 60-meter hurdles was Rebecca Williams, with a time of 8.61.

“Her times were good, and I thought it was good for her to get up here and get a win,” said sprints, hurdles and multi-events coach Scott Roberts. “We identified a few things we need to get corrected, so I think she can run a lot faster here the next few weeks.”

Jummy Alowonle took first in the long jump with a distance of 5.86 meters, and took second in the triple jump.

“Jummy had a very good day in the long jump,” said women’s coach Dick Lee.

Erica Lynn placed second in the high jump and also competed in the hurdles and shot put, scoring a personal best.

“Erica Lynn had a very good day in the three events she competed in,” Lee said. “She’s excited to get into the heptathlon next week. She’s been very solid.”

Also placing in the top three were Tamela Jadin in the pole vault with a third-place finish, and Jenny Mockler taking second in the 800-meter run.

Given the circumstances of the meet, Lee said he felt good about the performances.

“Not a meet where you come in and feel really pumped up because you know you’re not running against a lot of top teams, you don’t have as much adrenaline running as you will next week,” Lee said. “For coming out on Friday and just taking off and driving up here, stepping right on the track and going, I was pleased with the effort of the kids.”

The Cyclones will next compete on Friday and Saturday at the Iowa State Classic.
