Iowa State finishes in second place at Colleton River Collegiate

Then-sophomore Lachlan Barker came from Australia to compete with Cyclones’ men’s golf. Barker set a new personal best during his 2018-19 season with more than 120 birdies.

The Iowa State men’s golf team finished in second place at the Colleton River Collegiate after winning the event a year ago. The Cyclones ended with a score of 858 (292-275-291), only six shots behind first-place Michigan State (852).

Barker and Kinney bring their ‘A-game’

While Iowa State as a team finished second overall in the tournament, two Cyclones stood out all tournament long.

Lachlan Barker finished the highest of all the Cyclones at Colleton, ending his tournament in third place individually.

Barker ended the first round in 15th place in the individual standings. The second round is where Barker turned on the jets.

In the second round of play, Barker shot up the leaderboard by 13 spots and ended the second round in second place.

The main reason for Barker’s dramatic climb up the standings was his 7 under (65) he shot for the second round.

By the time the tournament had ended, Barker fell back to third place but was first in a very important statistic.

With 16 birdies for the Colleton River Collegiate, Barker had the most birdies by any golfer in the tournament.

Tripp Kinney scored a 212 for the tournament (71-69-72).

Like Barker, Kinney saved his best score for the second round.

Kinney shot 3 under for the round and shot par or under for every round of the tournament.

Both Barker and Kinney recieved their third top-10 finish of the season at the Colleton River Collegiate.

Starting off hot

The consistent theme of the spring season for the Cyclones has been the ability to start off every tournament off with a clean and confident first round.

That wish finally came true in this tournament, as the Cyclones were in the top-five from the very beginning.

Iowa State became boiing hot when the second round began. Five of the six competing Cyclones shot even or under par for the second round.

Iowa State cut down on the mental errors and bogies in the first two rounds, leading to multiple Cyclones sitting in the top-50 on the indivudal leaderboard when the second round came to a close.

Iowa State made its way up the team leaeeboard thanks to solid preformances in the first two rounds, moving from fourth to second place in one round of play.

Opposite Day

The Cyclones were able to accomplish their goal of starting the tournament off strong, but it didn’t translate into the final round.

Throughout multiple events in the fall and spring season, Iowa State has been able to whip up magic in the final rounds of tournaments, able to recover from the bad start that has regualry plagued the opening rounds of most tournaments.

Iowa State flipped the script for the Colleton River Collegiate, turning the final round into an uncharacteristicly sloppy one.

None of the six Cyclones shot under par for the final round, with the best score of the round coming from Kinney, who shot even.

The other final round scores are as follows:

  • Sam Vincent +3
  • Barker +1
  • Frank Lindwall +1
  • Jackson Kalz +7
  • Ricky Costello +1

As a team, Iowa State shot 3 over par for the final round.

The Cyclones racked up a total of 24 bogies in the final round, with only 16 birdies to counter that.
