Cyclone track teams hit the road

The ISU men’s and women’s track teams hit the road Friday to compete in the UNI Classic in Cedar Falls, where they face some smaller-conference competition from Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Drake, Bradley and Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones are coming off solid performances at the ISU Open last weekend. Neither team will be sending all of its players, instead electing to rest some members for the Iowa State Classic next weekend.

“It’s a situation where it’s between two big meets for us, so we don’t take everybody up to this meet,” said men’s coach Steve Lynn. “It’s not a real important meet as far as the meet itself is concerned, but there’ll be good competition at the meet.”

Lynn said he expects solid effort, regardless of their location.

“They’re either going to go up there and compete really hard, or the rest stay here and train,” Lynn said. “We’ve got a few bumps and bruises right now, so we’re trying to get those all straightened up for next week.”

Junior David Rotich, who did not compete at the ISU Open because of a hamstring injury, will be at Northern Iowa. At the Nebraska Open on Jan. 21, Rotich took third on Iowa State’s all-time performance list in the 1000-meter dash.

“I’m anxious to see how David [Rotich] comes back after missing a week,” Lynn said.

Jumps and Vaults coach Ron McEachran said he is looking for a good meet from senior Tony Douglas, who took first in the triple jump and second in the long jump last weekend.

“We’re going to triple jump this weekend with Tony, so I’m hoping to see some continued improvement technique-wise,” McEachran said.

The women are also looking ahead to the Iowa State Classic, and will leave some athletes home, including Ada Anderson and Sara Boisen, who took first and second, respectively, in the 800-meter run last weekend.

“It’s a meet for our kids that need to get another race in to get in and run,” said women’s coach Dick Lee. “More of our focus is getting ready for our next home meet, that will be a real big one.”

The meet features several younger competitors looking to gain some experience.

“It’s a good meet for our freshman to go in and gain some confidence,” Lee said. “It’s basically a good meet for our younger kids.”

McEachran is hoping for a strong meet out of Jummy Alowonle, as both Leigh Wagner and Priya Hoze are taking redshirts.

“I’m hoping Jummy [Alowonle] is good enough to be able to go long and triple jump; she was at an internship all fall,” McEachran said. “[We want] to get her back in the swing of things. She’s coming along.”

Tamela Jadin finished second last weekend in the pole vault, and McEachran is looking for a good meet out of her.

“Tamela Jadin in the pole vault had a little shin problem; she’s feeling better,” McEachran said. “I’d like to see her get a good vault in to get ready for [the Iowa State Classic].”

The first event is the men’s weight throw at 2 p.m. in the UNI Dome.
