The seventh-ranked ISU wrestling team dropped their second straight dual, falling 21-13 against fifth-ranked Minnesota on Friday night.

Cyclones Nate Gallick (10-0) and Travis Paulson (14-0) stayed undefeated, but Trent Paulson – recently ranked No. 1 – dropped his first match of the year, 5-4, to Gopher C.P. Schlatter.

Iowa State dropped to 3-2 on the season, while Minnesota is now 6-0.

“It was a battle of skills and wills,” coach Bobby Douglas said. “Minnesota showed why they’re one of the top teams in the nation.”

The dual wasn’t decided until the final match, as Minnesota’s 133-pound All-American, Mack Reiter, escaped with a 14-8 win over Jesse Sundell.

Sundell fell down early, 7-2, but recorded a reversal and a three-point near-fall in the second period before Reiter regained control.

Gallick started off the dual with a major decision, using four first-period takedowns in a 15-5 win over Manuel Rivera. Two matches later, sixth-ranked Travis Paulson earned a second period takedown in a 3-1 upset of fourth-ranked Matt Nagel.

Kurt Backes (184) and Joe Curran (197) recorded the other two Cyclone victories.

Iowa State is back in action Sunday afternoon in Ames against Cal Poly at 2 p.m.
