Cyclone Hockey hoping to keep seven-game winning streak alive

Cyclone Hockey, after last weekend’s road series against Oklahoma, finds itself in the midst of its second-longest unbeaten streak of the season.

In mid-October, the Cyclones suffered two losses against Ohio University. Since then, they have yet to lose a game, rolling off seven wins and one tie.

“For a young team like we are, [this win streak] is big, and with every win you gain confidence,” said assistant coach Chris Schmale.

The Cyclones are back on the road Friday to face Robert Morris College, attempting to continue their streak of eight games without a loss. The Cyclones hope to keep the winning going, especially as they get closer to their upcoming tournament.

The Cyclone Thanksgiving Classic will be held at the Ames/ISU Ice Arena on Nov. 25 to 27. Four teams will be playing in the tournament: Minnesota State, St. Cloud State, Nebraska and Iowa State. It is in a round-robin format, meaning each team plays the other three teams in the tournament, and is given points in order to determine a champion. The Cyclones play at 5 p.m. Nov. 25, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 26 and 11:30 a.m. Nov. 27.

As No. 5 Iowa State went into battle against 19th-ranked Oklahoma last weekend, its quest to continue the winning streak came into question. On two separate occasions last Friday night, the Cyclones found themselves trailing by a goal, and on both occasions Trevor Graham saved the day. His two goals helped bring the Cyclones to a 2-2 tie at the end of regulation. The Cyclones failed to score, leaving Schmale feeling as if a win was just out of reach.

“If we would have had more time in overtime we probably could have won the game,” he said.

After averting disaster the previous night, the Cyclones came out trying to continue their unbeaten streak. As the second period drew to a close, they once again found themselves trailing 2-1. This time it was senior captain David Moline who stepped up and rifled a slapshot past the goalkeeper to tie the game. Then, with about 10 minutes remaining in the third period, it was freshman Mike Murtaugh, who before the game was switched to defense, that came up with the goal to propel the Cyclones to a 3-2 win.

“To come from behind on the road, I think that’s probably the biggest win that we’ve had,” Schmale said.

The team also released information regarding an upcoming game against the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 14. The Cyclones have been given an opportunity to play at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3:30 p.m., and along with seeing the Cyclones play, fans have the chance to see the Iowa Stars play, as their game is scheduled after the Cyclones’. Tickets will be honored for both games.

“It is good recognition and exposure for the program,” Schmale said.

“So hopefully we can pack the place and play in front of a huge crowd.”
