Missouri won’t defeat K-State in Snyder’s finale

Brett Mcintyre

It’s the final regular season picks column of the year, ladies and gentlemen. With Thanksgiving break next week, you’ll be on your own to figure out what teams will win what games.

Send me your cell phone number and a check for $10, however, and I can leave a voicemail giving you the inside scoop.

I know what you’re all thinking – no, there won’t be anything special in today’s column because it’s the regular season finale.

Don’t worry though, I’ve still got one more column for bowl season, where I will predict the Big 12 bowl games.

Brett was 5-1 last week, making him 60-17 (.779) for the season.

OKLAHOMA STATE 4-5 (1-5) AT BAYLOR 4-6 (1-6)

Last week: Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech, 24-17; Baylor lost at Missouri, 31-16.

Well, after ragging on the Cowboys all year for being terrible, they come up with a stunning upset of Texas Tech, making the Big 12 bowl picture murkier.

In fact, Oklahoma State somehow still has not been eliminated from bowl eligibility.

I once considered this game a sure win for Baylor, but now I’m not so sure.

Oklahoma State can get to a bowl with a win over the Bears and Oklahoma, which is a rivalry where anything can happen.

The Cowboys have played well the past two games against Texas and Texas Tech, but can they match the same intensity for Baylor?

My guess is they won’t be as up for a team that’s not ranked or heavily favored.

Look for Baylor to squeak one out and finish with its best record since the Big 12 conference formed.

THE PICK: BAYLOR

MISSOURI 6-4 (4-3) AT KANSAS STATE 4-6 (1-6)

Last week: Missouri beat Baylor, 31-16; Kansas State lost at Nebraska, 27-25.

It is the end of an era in Manhattan as Kansas State coach Bill Synder has announced that he will be stepping down after the season.

Synder engineered one of the biggest, if not the biggest, turnarounds in the history of college football by taking a nonexistent football program and building it into a national power.

Like the guy or not, he helped in two of the biggest turnarounds ever. First, turning around Iowa under Hayden Fry – with a little help from Dan McCarney, Kirk Ferentz, Barry Alvarez and Bob Stoops to name a few – and then at Kansas State and is a lock for the Hall of Fame.

Some say the Wildcats had soft schedules, and maybe they did during the nonconference, but he still took the Wildcats to the brink of an appearance in the national championship, had Texas A&M not pulled an upset in the Big 12 title game.

No way, no how perennial underacheiver Missouri wins in Synder’s finale.

The Kansas State fans will pack the stadium fuller than it’s been for some time and the Tigers won’t have an answer.

THE PICK: KANSAS STATE

OKLAHOMA 6-3 (5-1) AT NO. 21 TEXAS TECH 8-2 (5-2)

Last week: Oklahoma beat Texas A&M, 36-30; Texas Tech lost at Oklahoma State, 24-17.

The Red Raiders laid an egg last week against the Cowboys, while Oklahoma held off a rally from Texas A&M to set up what could be a battle for a spot in the Cotton Bowl.

The Texas Tech rushing defense is 10th in the conference, which is good news for Adrian Peterson and the Sooner ground game. The Oklahoma pass defense is rather pedestrian itself, however, which could make for a shootout in Lubbock.

Oklahoma has been on a roll since losing to Texas and is probably better than its record indicates. Especially when you consider the teams they’ve lost to (TCU, Texas and UCLA) have a combined record of 29-2.

You have to assume the Red Raiders will be upset with the way they played last week, and Oklahoma seems to have their number.

I’ll go with the Sooners in this one because it seems anytime you get a team that can put together some good defensive schemes it seems you can derail the gimmicky Red Raider offense.

THE PICK: OKLAHOMA
